Secure your Own Oxygen Mask First

By Bert Zethof

"...In the event of a decompression, an oxygen mask will automatically drop from a compartment above your seat. To start the flow of oxygen, pull the mask towards you. Place it firmly over your nose and mouth, secure the elastic band behind your head, and breathe normally...If you are travelling with a child or someone who requires assistance, secure your mask on first, and then assist the other person ..."

I've always thought that the instruction to secure my mask first is one of the few times in life that I'm told to make myself the priority. I believe many leaders care so deeply for others that they neglect to care adequately for themselves.

It is often said that the secret to happiness is to be of service to others. But self-care is critical to be able to sustain and give fully of oneself. It's important to take the time for true re-creation.

So, I'll be with you shortly, after a visit to the local oxygen bar!
