Run with the Winds of Change

I had a conversation recently with the owner of several franchise outlets of a major fast food chain. We were talking about the difficulty in attracting and retaining qualified employees when he mentioned that with young job hunters today, the managers often feel like they\'re the ones being interviewed. The combination of a labour shortage and Generation Y\'s values mean these job seekers will shop around.

This remark made me think about how accepted business practices of the past may no longer be valid today. We are wise to check our assumptions, habits, and usual approaches at the door and to have an open mind.

Rather than run against the winds of change, we can view change as an opportunity and run with the wind. For the franchise owner, he could welcome the new focus of the job interview and develop compelling messages to be delivered by his recruiters that will give his franchise a competitive edge in the recruitment game.
