Do employees inevitably disengage as the organization grows?

By Bert Zethof

A question posed to me today:

Do you think it is inevitable that some employees become disengaged and even obstinate as organizations grow?

No, I don't think so. It comes down to the quality of the leadership. Effective leaders create processes and a culture that keep employees engaged, regardless of organization size. The problem is that there are relatively few great leaders.

A complicating issue is that no matter how well-intentioned a leader is, the relentless pace and heavy workloads often prevent leaders from dedicating as much time and energy to employee engagement as they would like.

Great leaders make their job easier by recruiting employees who are self-starters and take some responsibility for their job satisfaction. There are many helpful resources and tools available to do this.
